How to Convert Categories into Tags, or Vice Versa in WordPress

It has been more than 12 years since the inception of this blog. Although it was my first blog ever, it has gone through many iterations.

When I started getting some success in other niches, I dedicated this blog for writing articles that would help other bloggers.

I have been sharing my blogging experience from the last decade, and a lot has changed since then. Blogging has evolved so much.

Change the blog is not getting monetized in any way I lost the motivation of posting articles on this blog. Just a few days ago, I sat down and looked at all the fantastic articles that I shared, read comments of people who are thankful that I wrote these articles That solved their problems.

I got a little motivation and started to plan to restructure the blog so that I can update is blog more often to help more blogger.

I am still in the process of making changes to the blog, and one of the crucial changes was to turn a few categories of the blog into tags.

I have talked a lot about the best use of categories in tags to structure a website on the block itself.

Categories should be broad enough for you to write articles about them more frequently, and instead of using subcategories, I would recommend using tags. You can read about structure in your WordPress blog in an optimized way in a separate article.

In this article, I am going to tell you how you can convert your WordPress Categories into Tags, or, if you have some Tags that you think would be better as Categories, you can do that as well.

These were two categories that I wanted to turn into tags because all the articles related to WordPress are already categorised under WordPress.

Convert Categories into Tags with Categories to Tags converter

It is a WordPress plugin which is also available in the WordPress plugin repository, but, you can get it from the Tools section of your WordPress Dashboard.

Under Tools, click on Import, which gives you a list of tools used for different Import functions.

The tools are there since decades, and you won’t be using any of them unless you are switching your content from different blogging platforms, like Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, or Tumblr, etc.

But the Categories to Tags converter is pretty useful. I am amazed at how convenient it is to convert between Tags and Categories.

Once you have installed the Categories to Tags converter, you can click on it to run.

The Categories to Tags converter will show you the list of Categories by default. You can see in the image below –

(1) You get the option to whether you want to convert Categories to Tags, or, Tags to Categories.

(2) The Categories are listed by default. You can select the categories you want to convert.

(3) The Button triggers the action and does the conversion.

Like I mentioned earlier, I wanted to convert WordPress Plugins and WordPress Themes into Tags to form a better structure on my blog. I selected two Categories to turn into Tags.

Once the conversion is done successfully, you will be prompted on the next screen.

You can go back to the plugins area of your WordPress Dashboard to disable the plugin as you won’t be needing it again.

A word of caution

I would advise you to do this daily, and this is something you should consider doing in the earlier stages of your blog.

When you delete the category is or tags from your WordPress site, the URL of those tags are Categories also get deleted resulting in 404 Error to the visitors.

Are these pages are also indexed by Google but usually have less traffic compared two other pages of your blog.

Make sure you have changed the links if you have manually inserted it anyway inside posts, are the links from the navigation bar (Menu).

If you have got a lot of articles where you have lived the tags, and you still want to restructure your website, you can make use of the redirection feature of Yoast SEO Plugin.

All the use plugin is free to use the redirection feature is a premium feature for that you will have to buy the used flag in. If you have got a lot of traffic and you don’t want to miss receiving that traffic from Google, I think it would be an excellent investment.

Plus, you also get some other benefits in the premium version of the Yoast SEO plugin. You can read more about the Yoast SEO plugin on the blog.
